Dipendra K. Khanal has built his directing career around recognisable social settings and characters under pressure. His early films included Vigilante, identified at the time as Nepal's first 3D film, and Jholey, before Pashupati Prasad gave his work a wider public profile in 2016. Pashupati Prasad brought Khanal Moviemandu's first Movie Person of the Year honour and the D-Cine Award for Best Director. The film's reception also demonstrated how a story centred on small characters and everyday conflicts could hold a broad audience without turning its social concerns into a lecture. He later directed Dhanapati and wrote and directed Aama, continuing to work with family life, economic pressure and moral choice as dramatic material.
